Timing

How Long Does Fascia Replacement Take?

Replacing the fascia and soffit takes one to two days on most houses. A big detached house, scaffolding, or rot behind the old boards adds a day or two.

Free, no obligation. One local company prices it, not five.

  • 1 to 2 daysa semi or terrace
  • 2 to 3 daysa large detached house or bungalow
  • 0rooms to clear: it's all outside
  • 1 visitwith the gutters done at the same time

The usual job

One to two days, roughly like this

  1. Access set up: ladders, a tower or scaffold.
  2. Gutters and downpipes taken down.
  3. Old fascia, soffit and bargeboards off, or checked if they're being capped.
  4. Rafter ends checked, rotten sections cut back and repaired.
  5. New soffits and vents, then fascia, then bargeboards.
  6. Gutters and downpipes back up, or new ones fitted.
  7. Old timber and gutters taken away, the ground swept.

What adds time

Four things that add days

  • Rot. Rotten rafter ends have to be cut out and repaired before new boards go on.
  • Scaffolding. If a scaffold is needed it goes up before and comes down after.
  • Size and shape. A detached house has four sides; curved or stepped eaves and dormers take longer.
  • Weather. Rain and wind stop work at height. Ask what happens to an open roofline if the weather turns.

Planning it

When to book it

Book the fascia with any other job that needs access to the eaves: new gutters, external wall insulation, roof repairs or painting. One set of access, one visit. If you have bats, the timing is set by the licence: see bats.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Do I need to be home?

Not for the whole job. The company needs access round the house, and someone to agree any extra work if rot turns up.

Can it be done in winter?

Yes, between showers and in dry spells. Wind and rain stop work at height, so winter jobs can take longer.

How long do the new boards last?

uPVC commonly lasts 20 to 30 years with a wash once a year or so.
